Infections caused by the Vibro Vulnificus bacteria have increased significantly in the United States. Also known as “flesh-eating bacteria ,” the pathogen has claimed the lives of five people in Florida. The State Department of Health reports a total of 26 cases so far this year.

According to the health agency of the southern state of the United States, Vibro Vulnificus caused the death of two people in Hillsborough County and three more deaths in Pasco, Sarasota and Polk counties. With the exc Phone Number List eption of this last location, the rest of the sites are located on the Florida coast that connects with the Gulf of Mexico.

Vibro Vulnificus : what is the “flesh-eating” bacteria?
Flesh-eating bacteria are microorganisms that grow in warm, brackish waters. It enters the bloodstream of humans through small cuts or wounds in the skin. Eating contaminated raw shellfish is also a cause of infection. It belongs to the genus of Vibro pathogens , responsible for causing diseases such as vibriosis or cholera.

Vibro Vulnificus infections are not common, but can be fatal for elderly people and people with chronic immune-related conditions. According to estimates from the Cleveland Clinic , between 100 and 200 cases of infection with the flesh-eating bacteria are reported each year in the United States. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) indicates that the vulnerable population has a mortality rate of 33%.

bacteria Escherichia coli
These bacteria steal genes that make them invincible
In wastewater treatment plants, E. coli bacteria coexist with traces of antibiotics that make them more resistant.
What are the ravages of the Vibrio Vulnificus bacteria ?
In a mild case of vibriosis, patients suffer symptoms such as chills, fever, diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting during the first day of exposure to the bacteria . Skin wounds infected with Vibrio Vulnificus often develop blisters, abscesses, and ulcers.

The “flesh-eating” bacteria causes necrotizing fasciitis, known as flesh-eating infection. The disease corrodes the skin, muscles, nerves, fat and blood vessels around an infected wound. When the microorganism enters the bloodstream, patients can develop septicemia. The bacteria release toxins into the bloodstream that could cause extremely slow flow, damaging tissues and organs.

Vibrio Vulnificus also causes sepsis. The body generates an extreme immune response that affects the functioning of important organs such as the heart or kidneys. Acute distress syndrome (ARDS) occurs with the potential to cause permanent brain and lung damage.

Hurricanes, climate change and the “flesh-eating” bacteria
The proliferation of Vibrio Vulnificus has a direct relationship with cyclones and their effects. Health authorities recall that last year there was an "abnormal increase due to the impacts of Hurricane Ian" with 74 cases and 17 deaths in Florida. A similar situation occurred in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
